The Carter Center is committed to improving the quality of election observation and democratic governance in collaboration with others.

Since 1989, the Carter Center has observed 100 elections in 38 countries, with current projects in:

The Democratic Election Standards project aims not only to build consensus on international benchmarks for elections but also to use them actively in our work. Conducting our work in accordance with the Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation and using practical tools such as ELMO, we strive to employ innovative methodology and rigorous standards.

In addition, the Center works with citizen observer groups so that they, too, become familiar with international obligations for democratic elections and use this framework to advocate for change.  Current programs related to these efforts are in:
